I've been in the shop today working on next week's video. Very distracted watching the 49ers-Saints game. San Francisco always seems to capitalize on lucky plays and turnovers, but I suspect New Orleans will pull this one out.
Working on a cutting board for next week. Yeah, I know, yawn. I hope to bring something new to the myriad of cutting board videos. Plus I really need one.

You're right. People are looking to be offended. And anyone who was offended by your piece was looking for a reason to be offended. There - now they are all offended again. Why can't we all just lighten up?

I wouldnt take to heart to much I sent you a video link of a video I made for you, to give you an idea on your Australian project.. Now after seeing this clock update, I just want to say, at the beginning of my video when i tease you about sounding like a "Country Forrest Gump" I was just messin with you...LOL Wouldnt want to offend you..ha ha .. But if you get a chance check out that video, I emailed you the link and a little info on what its about... You could have some fun with it.. As always, Keep doing what you do..Great Job!!!

ReplyDeleteI think you hit the nail on the head, Why is it that some people just look for reasons to be offended? Did someone direct them to your site and demand they watch your productions? NO,...I think that folks need to appreciate the fact that you do this for us; some major corporation is not funding you. I give you KUDOS and a job well done. I have learned so many things from your videos and the reason I watch,,, well it is because you keep it light and bright..
Keep on doing what strikes you as the right thing, and do not be influenced by the negatives.

No apology needed here. I'm really sick of folks being "offended". I'm 68 and if I were "offended" by every thing I didn't agree with or remarks folks made, I'd be pissed all the time.
I wonder how long those folks watched the video before they got "offended"

ReplyDeleteInteresting responses to your video, I'd like to share mine. Having seen the Wood Whisperer clock video before yours, my first thought was this is great. We get to see two totally diverse wood workers doing the same project. Random Abstract vs. Concrete Sequential thinking obtaing the same end result. If anything, this just screams at celebrating diversity, a concept some people have a hard time getting a handle on. Love your shtick,keep 'em coming and in the words of Stephen King: "Don't let the sh**ers get you down"!

ReplyDeleteI think the only person who should be offended is Jeff Foxworthy. Just kidding. People who watch your webcasts need to remember that you are the one sticking his neck out week after week trying to entertain us. I don't see any other woodworking website or YouTube videos with the same approach and humor that you use. Yeah, there might be other woodworkers out there with more skills and raw woodworking talent (not saying you don't have skills, please don't be OFFENDED). But most of us who view woodworking as an enjoyable distraction from the headaches and nonsense of what is our life and reality. We are not Norm Abrams or are we going to be for the most part. We just enjoy woodworking and enjoy your site. My four cents anyway. (Have to account for inflation).

Steve, I have to say I'm really kind of offended at your conciliatory approach to this whole issue... ;-) I think the proper response to someone being offended by one of your videos might be either a) get a life, you loser, b) kiss my grits, or c) both a & b. Keep your sense of humor, and remember that most people deserve themselves.

ReplyDeleteThe sad thing is that when most people express how "offended" they are (by some of the most ridiculous things, by the way) it's usually because they are actually insecure about it and even perceive it to be a weakness in themselves...even when it isn't.
We shouldn't run off to maliciously attack or degrade others, but what happened to celebrating our differences and even laughing at ourselves and the real-life slap-stick that occurs when our differences collide? How many sitcoms have been written about a man's refusal to ask for directions? It's funny, because for most of us it's true...and for a lot us, it's cost us a lot of time and effort. No whats sad is these people like this Steve fellow from up there in CALIFORNIA making fun of us down here and now hes picking on those from the down under Australia r some where i thinks its somewhere down here in the south not sure and i think you had something to to do with my New Orleans Saints getting their tails whipped by those 49ers just kidding im from Louisiana and i enjoyed the video and that wood whisper guy i dont think he is worried about the clock can't really remember his last name spagnola r something got a girl singing it at the end of his videos he may have been on the Saints lost too. im going to blame both yall proble both in on it. i watch both your site along with other wood working site like lumberjocks and learn a lot you have a gift of teaching i like your style keep your head up and dont P IN THE WIND

I remarked to my wife after watching the clock video how funny your stuff is and I'm disappointed for you that you had to receive negative feedback for the whole Southerner thing. To me it was clearly a fun, completely non-offensive clock build narrative and I enjoyed it. Your videos are awesome and entertaining, keep it up!
As I said, looking forward to the Aussie video and how you portray us folks from down under..... and if you get time amidst the impersonations try to build something from wood in the video as well... :)

Here's another thought that I would pass along: Your devoted fans would have trashed the author of the "offended" comments and would have made a mockery of whatever they wrote. It is probably a good thing that you didn't post them.

ReplyDeleteI'm from the South and found nothing offensive in your accent. Some people are just too sensitive. However, I was offended by the mustache. My aunt has one just like it and you really looked like her in that video. Now that I think about it, I guess I'm more offended by the fact that she can grow a better mustache than me!

Don't apologize! I was born and bred in Arkansas (any inbred joke here will offend me :P) and I didn't have a problem with it. I believe that if you can't laugh at yourself, you have no right to laugh at others.

ReplyDeleteI was deeply offended by your video. As a mustached person I found your reference to 'stupid mustache' and the actual 'comedy' mustache in your video most upsetting. I also found your reference to 'walking on eggshells' extremely offensive and cruel to eggs and their shells. Please try to be more considerate towards mustaches and their eggs in future.

Your clock isn't exactly like Marc's. "The wood whisperer". Yours was round, as well as had 2 extra pins inside it. You are right, some people are just looking for a reason to be offended.
