Happy New Year!

Well, we made it through the holiday season. I am so ready for life to get back to normal!

Let's see if I can start by catching up on stuff you guys have sent over.

First of all, Mike Keeling took the time to make up a SketchUp design of my tortilla press. It's really a great little project, and one that is very useful in the kitchen. Glad someone made some plans! Check it out here. Thanks Mike!

Mike Conolly is aware that one of the projects I plan on building soon is a scrap wood holder. Here's a great bin Mike made using wood from old pallets. Love using wood that a lot of people consider waste!

Yeah, I know the gift building season is over, but just think about this: Valentines Day is coming up in a little over a month! Ha! Bert Aarssen is an infantry officer in the Dutch Army and likes to do a little woodworking in his free time. Here's how he interpreted my candle holder. Very chic!

I've been spending my time trying to design some sort of iPad/Tablet stand. After thinking about it a while. I would like it to be a wood case that converts into a stand. To that end, I made a mock-up of my wife's Kindle Fire, so I don't have to keep bringing the device into my shop. I dubbed it the iWood Tablet. Or even better, The Kindling.

  1. Steve: Here's a tip to get rid of the smell. Try spreading Baking soda down all round the area. Get your self one of those big bags that they sell at either Costco or Sam's club. That should deneutralize the smell. Good Luck!

  2. That is one first rate disaster you have on your hands there.

I was thinking kitty litter to soak it up myself. Though I've no first hand experience. You're a woodworker so maybe sawdust. Then sweep it up and haul it out. Still might be good to sprinkle baking soda after to neutralize the odor. Mopping might not be the worst idea either. Pine-sol for that clean piney scent!

One thing I have seen is water pipes, you know the other side of plumbing, and they get loaded up with sediment over the years. Seeing that is really scary.

Your crawlspace is like a paradise compared to mine.

  3. Hey Bro. I'm a plumber by trade and the best thing I've used is lime. You can get big bags from anywhere they sell farm stuff. They use it for animal urine. Put a good layer down and you should be good. Don't feel bad, the worst crawlspace I've been in is where the second floor stack was not tied into the main line. Meaning for a year the bathroom upstairs was dumping straight into the crawlspace!! Not a pleasant day at work. Hope it goes well for you.

  4. Dude You got luckey!
When my house flooded we had to jackhamer 50'of concrete slab to get to the busted pipe. This also meant replacing the ENTIRE basement of my house!
    Sorry about the flood,
    Alan

  5. Steve,

Can't wait to see what you come up with for the Kindle stand... I've been mulling that over in my brain as well.

    All the best,

    Doug

  6. Aaduke02 You know the plumber's motto, your $h*t is our bread and butter. Job security! What kind of lime, sweet lime, mason's lime, the stuff you spread on lawns? Or doesn't it matter for the application? Do you just leave it down, or do you pick it back up again? Me, I'd want the slime out.

I've had a few rough days at the office myself.

  7. PaulF--- I don't think it matters what type of lime. The kind you get at places like Southern States is geared toward livestock so it's meant for cutting dampness and smell. It's always worked great for me so I haven't had a reason to try any others. I have always just let it stay down. You could shovel it all up but in a few weeks you never know anything happened. It's great stuff.
