Catching up on viewer projects

Catching up on some viewer projects.

It seems Quarto turned out to be my most popular project this past Christmas season. It has been fun seeing all the variations you have come up with. Jeff Hammond had the clever idea to add a chalkboard top to this one he made for his nephews so they can keep score as they play!

*****
Bill Wilson made his version for his granddaughter. Not having a lathe,  he used dowels for the round pieces:

*****
"Byrdie" as he is known around the interwebs, made a couple of Quarto games as gifts and had the great idea to include a set of instructions with each one. If you would like to make a game as a gift, you here are his instructions all ready for you to print out.

*****
Quick project idea! Even though Christmas has passed, there are always occasions to make quick gifts. Marinos Georgopoulos, a new woodworker in Greece with limited space and no power tools made these candle holders for his first project. Woodworking gifts don't have to be complicated to me well-received. I love the colors on these.

*****
Another first project. This one from Mike Chambers who was ambitious enough to make this hickory and maple jewelry box for his wife. I always like to tell new woodworkers that boxes make good projects to start with. You can learn a lot of basic woodworking techniques by making one.

*****
And speaking of boxes, check out Freeman Coleman's first hardwood project he made out of tiger caspi wood. (It's based on a video I made ages ago.) Freeman says he never touched a saw until a month ago! Not bad at all.

*****
It seems no update is complete without including a mallet! Here is one that Eric Duran made from olive wood.

*****
Mikk Sülla in Estonia has been making end grain cutting boards. Cutting boards are great projects and leave a lot of room for creativity. He made these using oak, ash, birch, maple and walnut. Every woodworker should make at least one cutting board!

*****
This little snowman from Randy Cosgrove is too cute not to share. Maple, walnut and padauk. Randy recently got a lathe and discovered Carl Jacobson’s web site and wood turning videos. Even if you don't you have a lathe, Carl's weekly videos are worth watching!

*****
Don't forget: it's storage and organization month! Here's a great storage project for you winos. I mean wine drinkers. Stan Peters' wine rack.

  1. Fear Mongers are just trolling you Steve, ignore those pendejos... Good job as always! Now where's that home made drill press you were going to make? The one where you could use your hand drill? Gracias!

  3. Most phone and device chargers consume a miniscule amount of energy when they're left on but not plugged into a device to charge - far less than things like TVs, microwaves, central heating, etc., etc.. Here's a handy set of data:

    http://standby.lbl.gov/summary-chart.html

Note that phone chargers are nearly the lowest average standby consumption out of pretty much everything else you might find in your house! That power consumption is all that could possibly go into generating heat... that is, pretty much nothing.

(Apparently editing comments isn't allowed, so hey - delete and re-post.)

  4. Good Job Again Steve. Every Monday you need to post " Ramsey's Rant " it was awesome. Did anybody mention if you let an infant play with quarto pieces unattended they could be a choking hazard. And if you slap a saw stop sticker on your new table saw you can actually touch the blade while it's running. All joking aside Most of us appreciate all the time and effort you do for woodworkers and our community. Thanks For Everything.

  5. Fantastic rant... loved it....

However I FEAR (had to use the word) that you missed the opportunity to add into the design a marshmallow dispenser that would dispense freshly cooked marshmallows whilst you waited for your device to charge. Alternatively you could add another compartment (this one would have to be non swiss cheesed) where you could put your pants and they could be steam pressed for Sunday Church. But ultimately I FEAR your design lacks it's most important feature... I mean with the massive amount of heat produced you could generate enough energy to power a small village in Eastern Africa.

When I make mine I plan on including all of the above plus paint the Grim Reaper & nuclear symbols all over the cover. This way people who visit my house will know to stay well away from my EXPLODING CHARGING STATION OF DOOM!

    Love your work Steve :)

  6. Steve your video rant got me so hot under the collar I nearly spontaneously combusted, and that my friend could have caused an accual, and very real house fire. So watch those inflammitory words they have much more power than you can imagine.

Hi Steve, great post and good to see someone passionately stating their difference of opinion. Too many Tv and Web personalities feel the need to remain politically indifferent.
On another subject, i noticed your Australia Day project from 2012 in the background of your video. Will you be doing another project for Australia day this year? It's coming up soon. Only 9 days to go....
